General core competencies related to agriculture extension

Core Competencies

Definition

1.    Program Planning

A farm animal health plan is an active management tool aimed at promoting the health and welfare of farm animals by setting out disease prevention, detection and management procedures. It should be based on farm specific issues and at its most basic, it should be ensure that illness, injury and mortality amongst farmed animals are at minimum levels. More progressively, it should also be seen as providing procedures that promote positive health and welfare

2. Communication Skills

Communication competence refers to the knowledge of effective and appropriate communication patterns and the ability to use and adapt that knowledge in various contexts.

3.    Leadership

Leadership competencies are leadership skills and behaviours that contribute to superior performance. By using a competency-based approach to leadership, organizations can better identify and develop their next generation of leaders.

4.    Education and Information

Providing students with meaningful tasks and activities, where they can explicitly reflect on where and how they are using the Core Competencies, will further their development in Communication, Thinking, and Personal and Social. The illustrations for each sub-competency provide examples of rich tasks, activities, and feedback.

5.    Diversity, Pluralism & Multiculturism

Diversity competency defined as the ability to understand a set of values, behaviors, attitudes and practices within an organization or system that allows one to work effectively, cross culturally. Pluralism assumes that diversity is beneficial to society and that autonomy should be enjoyed by disparate functional or cultural groups within a society, including religious groups, trade unions, professional organizations, and ethnic minorities. Multiculturism is obtaining the awareness, knowledge, and skills to work with people of diverse backgrounds in an effective manner.

6.    Professionalism

The attitude and behaviour of the resident physician. The expectation for all medical professionals is that each and every one will treat all people with respect, compassion, and dignity.

7. Extension & Organizational Management

An extension agency is an organisation that practises extension, which aims to assist individuals or groups in defining and achieving their goals. Organization management refers to the art of getting people together on a common platform to make them work towards a common predefined goal.

8. Program Evaluation & Research

Program evaluation is a systematic method for collecting, analyzing, and using information to answer questions about projects, policies and programs, particularly about their effectiveness and efficiency. Program evaluations can involve both quantitative and qualitative methods of social research.

9.    Technical/ Subject matter Expertise

Technical subject should not be a priority agenda and competency among extension educators. On the contrary, most universities still see technical subject matter expertise as one of the most important competencies extension educators should possess. The review suggests that technical subject matters remain to be important and critical to extension irrespective of the degree of the development in agriculture.

10.  ICT Skills

ICT skills has been used in abroad widely for the study and improvement of various aspects of livestock production, research and education. Mainly the ICT is playing a greater role in livestock disease control, dairy herd management, livestock production and for marketing of livestock and livestock produce.

CORE COMPETENCIES RELATED TO ANIMAL SCIENCE

Core Competencies

Definition

1.    Nutrient Utilization

Must possess the essential knowledge and skill on quality and quantity of nutrients during nutritional shifts or nutritional limitations, capacity of a system, utilisation reduce the unit cost of production and suitable nutrient, suitable nutrient and growth rate.

2.    Raised Without Antibiotic

It is the animal products that have been produced without exposure to antibiotics. More and more markets are demanding milk and meat that are from animals raised without Antibiotics. Specifically looking at risk of animal getting sick, the occurrence and severity change with access to medicine and indicates the growing trend of raising animals.

3.    Antioxidant

Antioxidants are the foundation of immunity and health. They allow ruminants to channel nutrients to production and not to overcoming preventable health challenges, reducing the negative effects of inflammation, to prevent toxicity and neutralize the effect of chronic inflammatory condition.

4.    Environmental Management

Without compromising production aims, better nutrient utilisation equals less nutrient loss equals reduced impact of production system on the environment. Must possess the essential knowledge of utilization of livestock waste, organic fertilizer, and pit disposal.

5.    Skeletal Development

Skeletal systems provide structure and protection for a variety of organisms. A water-based skeleton provides the structure necessary for movement in worms. The internal skeleton is endoskeleton present in many animals provides the structural network for support, protection, and movement for instance consume the good nutrients, added supplements in livestock’s diet and training of movement consistently.

6.    Health/Wellbeing

Understanding the scientific basis of the safety and health promoting properties of nutrients and non-nutrient components of food or feed, based on knowledge of the metabolic effects of nutrients, anti-nutrients, toxicants, additives, pharmacologically active agents (drugs). Other than that, animal nutritionist must have the ability to recognise strengths and weaknesses in dietary, nutrition and health research methods for animal system.
